How do Medicare Supplement insurance plans work with Original Medicare?

Medicare Supplement insurance plans help cover out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). These can include copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Some also help pay for services Original Medicare doesn't cover, such as emergency medical care when traveling outside the United States. The basic benefit structure for each plan is the same, no matter which insurance company offers it.

In general, Medicare Supplement insurance plans don’t cover dental care, hearing aids or vision care. They also don’t cover medications, but you can combine a Medicare Supplement insurance plan with a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

What types of Medicare Supplement insurance plans are available?

Available plans in Minnesota vary depending on the carrier. UnitedHealthcare offers two plans, and one has five optional riders. When you compare plans, look at premiums, benefit levels, and out-of-pocket costs to find which plans best fit your needs.

Applying for a Medicare Supplement insurance plan

The best time to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan is during your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment period because your acceptance is guaranteed. It starts on the first day of the month in which you're both age 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. You may have a guaranteed issue right to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan in certain situations, for example: if you have a specific type of health insurance coverage that changes in some way, such as a loss of the coverage, or you enrolled with a “trial right” to try a Medicare Advantage Plan but change your mind and want to switch back to a Medicare Supplement plan during the trial period.
